What has NEF records done for me?
To put it simply, a shit ton. It allowed me to do something I always wanted to do but didn’t know if I ever would get the chance to. One of my dreams for the longest time was to put out a collection of my own music in particular a CD. See, collecting cd’s was really my only hobby growing up outside of sports. It’s something not a lot of y’all do any more! I’ll admit I don’t do it too much anymore either. Digital music releases have become more of the norm now a days. But there is just something about opening the package of a cd and looking at the artwork on the sleeve and CD itself, it enhances the story in which the artist is trying to convey. A physical representation of what your about to listen too.
NEF records allowed me to make my dream come true. In the summer of 2015 I put out “The Layback” my own collection of music. It was a mixtape, but we treated it as if it were a debut album. I didn’t know if I would ever have the chance to experience that. I was only going to put out music under the right set of circumstances. I could have never put out my own music if it wasn’t going to be a high quality recording. No microphone in the closet type of shit for me. NEF was not that, it was a professional recording studio with an engineer and producer Anthony Zonfrilli that helped me find confidence in myself, my music, and create a product I could stand behind. I was at a crossroads at that point in my life, It was a true now or never moment for me to make an attempt at making music or give up on that one particular dream entirely. NEF records provided me the opportunity and I enjoyed every single step of the process.
Writing music was nothing new to me it was something I had done since 7 years old but recording music was BRAND new to me. Each recording session got a little bit better and instilled a little bit more confidence in myself. Our working relationship/friendship grew as well as our comfortability with working with one and other. At the same time the project started coming together piece by piece. Anthony guided me throughout the whole process and we did it. We put together a complete project and pressed up physical copies. Every mixtape we had made is floating out there in the world somewhere, I didn’t get stuck holding on to a bunch of extras. Some of them still may be getting spins some may be stuck under the passenger side seat of someones car but it’s cool to know they are out there.
I look forward to seeing what NEF does next and what other artists and projects come out of there. I’m happy to give any sort of guidance or creative ideas to whomever is apart of the family and the future of NEF records. I just recently started working on a new project, look out for my follow up mixtape “Nice with Words” dropping at some point in 2017. If you want to listen, stream, or download the project I’ve been telling you about (The Layback) you can do so here:
