Beat Maker vs. Producer

So this is an issue that bothers me sometimes. Who cares right? Well you don’t have to read it but I’m typing it anyway. So here at NEF Records we deal with a lot of Hip Hop music, whether its making a beat, recording vocals, or producing a complete song or album. My issue is that people don’t seem to know or give a shit about the difference between the person who made the beat that they bought or got permission to use, and the guy sitting behind a console, setting up mics, spending time going over lines to make them fit, choosing the right effects, altering takes, tuning shitty vocals, adding background vocals, and on and on, you get the idea. Now, absolutely, the guy or gal or both or neither, or whatever the fuck this stupid society wants to label things as today, deserves their credit for MAKING the BEAT, so they get a tag or plug or whatever the deal is that they make. At the same time the PRODUCER that has taken a beat and turned it into an actual song just gets to put in work and never gets a mention. This doesn’t sit right with me. It also purps my nerps because if someone hears a song that I personally produced and likes it or is thinking they might want to work with whoever PRODUCED that track, there’s no way that they know I did it. They see “PRODUCED BY – BEAT MAKER” and will tend to seek out whoever that name is and probably buy a beat and label their song with “PRODUCED BY – BEAT MAKER” and the cycle continues, while the actual PRODUCER never even sees their name tagged. So the moral of the story, if anyone read this far is, give credit where its due. This is a very tough industry to be in, especially the Independent/Underground side of it. All an Independent like me has to hope for is references from people that have worked with them. If not, well I probably don’t care that much. They just tell me I need website content.
